Penang’s New Marina
Published: Wednesday, 04 May 2011
The Malaysian island of Penang, a popular yachting layover point between Singapore and the cruising waters of the Andaman Sea, is now blessed with a new marina along its scenic northern shores. The E&O Berhad, which operates the legendary Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang, owns and operates this new 40-berth marina, named the Straits Quay Marina, with John Ferguson as marina manager. Ferguson is well-known in the region for his efforts to promote yachting, and for his tenure as chief organizer of the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, a race more than 20 years old and featuring lengthy stopovers in Penang.
The marina is situated on the northeast corner of the Seri Tanjung Pinang development at Tanjung Tokong, Pulau Pinang, and is part of the Straits Quay Retail complex belonging to E&O Berhad. Straits Quay includes food & beverage outlets, shops and leisure facilities, and private apartments. Straits Quay is signposted from the main roads in this part of Penang.
The marina has 40 pontoon berths that can accommodate boats from ten to 25 metres in length, with the approach channel and marina basin dredged to three metres below chart datum. All berths have water and electricity supplied via pedestals. The marina basin is secured inside electronically operated access gates. A Boaters’ Centre is located within the Marina Management Office at the northeast corner of Straits Quay, with information office, wi-fi access and shower rooms. Prior booking of berths is highly recommended, and they will only be allocated subject to availability. The marina is an authorised Landing Point for vessels entering or departing from Malaysia, and marina management can assist with entry and exit procedures.
Security for yachts has been established with a set of pontoon gates and access cards to a restricted area limited to yacht owners, their representatives and marina staff. The area is also patrolled by security guards. Owners may authorize contractors to conduct minor repairs and fit outs, but the marina has no dedicated repair or haul-out facilities.
The new Straits Quay Marina joins the Tanjung City Marina as the key access point for yachtsmen in Penang, with the new marina being located quite close to popular beaches, shopping areas and historic sites within old George Town. Contact by boats arriving at the marina during operating hours (9am to 6pm) is by VHF Channel 71.
