Sanlorenzo shipyard has been producing strictly tailor-made motor yachts since 1958. It entered its SL94 model for the 2012 UIM Environmental Award and won the award at this prestigious event. UIM, the international governing body of power boating, was launched to inspire and recognize excellence in innovation, development and application of environmentally friendly technologies.  In mid February UIM announced that Sanlorenzo had won and the trophy was awarded at a gala held at the Fairmont Monte Carlo Hotel in Monaco on February 23.

The SL94 is considered on of the most eco-friendly vessels on the water today. With her unmistakable Sanlorenzo lines, she was designed with balanced volumes and the proper ratio between covered and open spaces. The SL94 was designed to take full advantage of the increasing environmental awareness that characterizes today's yachting industry.

In awarding the Trophy, the UIM made special note of the electronic probes used to monitor and prevent oil spillage and the electric actuators used to avoid hydraulic oil leakage from the steering systems. On-board sewage treatment is carried out by an IMO-approved plant, while fuel usage and tank levels for the main engines and gensets are continually monitored from the wheelhouse.

Other important key points are the climatisation plant optimization and the low energy lighting system. Also, it is important to underline that the Sanlorenzo SL94 is produced with fiberglass structures characterized by a low-emissions manufacturing process: the deckhouse and deck are made using vacuum-infusion resin, and the entire hull is built with the same vacuum-infusion process using vacuum bags for PVC bonding.

“We are very happy with the 2012 Environmental Award and thank UIM very much for this important recognition. Sanlorenzo has always put effort into building timeless yet innovative motoryachts. Our SL94 hull is an elegant yacht but also rich with innovations, especially regarding its environmentally aware systems which even exceed the requirements of RINA’s Green Star”, said Massimo Perotti, Sanlorenzo Spa’s chairman.

At the same ceremony, in Monaco, Volvo Penta's Inboard Performance System (IPS) marine drive was awarded Best Inovation of 2012 by UIM. Since its launch in 2005, more than 15,000 pods have been delivered.

According to Volvo Penta, boats powered by this system can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30 percent and achieve significant noise level reductions over traditional shaft systems. The UIM recognised this as an excellent and innovative technology with a very positive impact for the environment.
