Ferretti launches 'largest' 24-metre yacht

With the introduction of its new 960 motoryacht, Italian builder Ferretti has created the largest '24-metre' yacht in existence. The 24-metre (80-foot) category of motoryacht was introduced a few years ago by the MCA to set international construction and equipment standards for superyachts. The length is measured from the transom to a point midway up the bow so as long as the yacht has this length to that point it can have big overhangs to extend the length without compromising its category of being ‘under 24 metres’. Many builders add as much as 10 feet to the length but Ferretti has gone a stage further and added 15 feet to make this 960 'the largest 24-metre' ever.
They have created this new design without compromising performance. At 96 feet it borders on the superyacht sector, normally the preserve of other builders in the Ferretti Group. A yacht that is over the 24-metre limit must have a professional skipper and construction must meet a number of big ship standards. This adds considerably to both cost and weight.
The Ferretti 960 now challenges other builders in the Ferretti Group, notably those offered by the Custom Line division, such as the CL97. All Custom Line yachts qualify as ‘over 24-metre yachts’ and cost considerably more. Thus this 960 is a direct challenge to the Custom Line products. It is expected that the Ferretti Group will soon announce changes to the way that the group is structured and the size of yachts each member can offer in future. This will remove the anomaly of the 960 competing with Custom Line.
The first two 960s were recently launched and sold to US owners. This yacht also competes directly with the Azimut 96 and the San Lorenzo 94, both over 24 metres, as well as the products of British builders Sunseeker and Princess. With a top speed of 32 knots she is a true sports yacht.
Fabio Marcellino, project manager for the 960, commented: “We took many elements from our superyacht experience within the Ferretti Group to develop the 960 and we have combined those with the classic Ferretti styling. I worked for over two years on this project which has now taken Ferretti yachts into new territory.”
The 960 is Ferretti's first raised-pilothouse motoryacht and the first with the master suite on the main deck level.
