Steyr Motors opens Hong Kong office

On 15 July the Austrian-based Steyr Motors held a gathering for press and invited guests to herald the opening of their new office in Hong Kong. This follows a buy out of the company by a Chinese investor in September last year.
Steyr is renowned for its production of parallel hybrid drive systems (HDS) for marine craft. They use a mono-block technology in cast alloy for their combustion engines to limit cylinder distortion. Most units are produced in a straight-six configuration to limit vibration. These diesel engines are coupled with high torque electric engines for efficient and environmentally-friendly propulsion.
Currently, Steyr produces engines in the 50 to 300 horsepower range for the recreational and light working boat categories but there are plans to increase the capacity up to 500 horsepower and thereby help gain entry into the luxury yacht market.
The offices in Hong Kong, China, Indonesia and Vietnam will be controlled through Steyr GmbH in Austria, while they will work through dealers and distributors in Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and South Korea.
Despite the Chinese buy out, manufacturing will still be carried out exclusively in Austria. Work has already started on expansion at Steyr’s Austrian facility to handle increased output and also production of larger motors once that decision is made.
