A report on the website Whatsonxiamen.com states that in the first six months of 2013 the city of Xiamen sold a total of 41 yachts, while the 2012-2013 China Yacht Report stated that the city has beaten other coastal cities like Haikou, Sanya, Shenzhen and others for competitiveness in the Chinese yacht industry. It ranked first amongst 14 other coastal cities covered in the report.
The majority of the boats sold, some 67 percent, were small yachts of less than 40 feet. Medium yachts of between 40 and 60 feet accounted for around 17 percent while the 60 to 80-foot group stood at 14 percent. Superyachts captured a mere 2 percent of the local market.
Of the 14 boats over 40 feet sold during this period, 11 were local built in Xiamen itself. The report also found that yachting is becoming ever more popular amongst the newly wealthy in the area. Local buyers accounted for 87 percent of all the sales over the period.
Xiamen’s yacht industry has seen very rapid development in recent years on the back of good government support.
