Australian challenges Ellison for next America’s Cup

Robert Oatley, an Australian winemaker who owns an island off Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, has officially challenged Oracle Team USA for the next America’s Cup, according to the Reuters news agency.
It was revealed that Oately and his son had issued the challenge through their Queensland-based Hamilton Island Yacht Club. Being the first to deliver a signed document to the prevailing team, they become the “Challenger of Record”.
The “challenge” document was apparently delivered to Oracle’s sponsor, the Golden Gate Yacht Club, by one of Oatley Vineyard’s employees just after the Oracle team crossed the finish line in this year’s event.
The Golden Gate Yacht club is neither confirming nor denying the challenge at this point but comments are expected within the next week.
The Oatley vineyards are located in northern California and also in the Hunter Valley in Australia. Oatley is considered about as famous for his wine as he is for sailing. All his racing yachts have all been called Wild Oats. They have participated in and won the Sydney-to-Hobart long-ocean race several times.
