In line with the ‘green’ approach to yacht building pioneered by Columbus Yachts, a brand of Palumbo Shipyards, the innovative Columbus Sport Hybrid 40M made its premier appearance at the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show.
Powered by a very advanced hybrid propulsion system, she combines high performance, with a maximum speed of 23 knots, with greatly reduced environmental impact. The interiors are versatile, featuring large windows and eco-friendly materials.
She sleeps 10 guests in five staterooms with the owner's suite and study on the main deck. She comes with a crew of seven. With ample deck space, various sunning and dining arrangements and zero speed stabilizers, this unique 40-metre boat is RINA classed, LY2, Green Plus (Y), Hybrid Propulsion (Y) and AUT CCS (Y) compliant.
The hybrid system consists of two electric motors, connected to the gearbox through a PTI and a pre-reduction gearbox. In the hybrid propulsion mode, one can turn off the main propulsion engines and run just on the electric motors running at fixed RPM on the diesel generator reducing fuel consumption and toxic emissions. The available power is 120kW with a top speed of around eight knots. The hybrid system will allow the yacht to cruise extremely quietly and vibration-free.
In shaft generator mode, the same electric motor will be moved by the prime movers, giving electric power of up to 120kW. This allows the diesel generators to be turned off, thereby saving fuel consumption and reducing dangerous emissions.
Columbus Yachts stated that the Columbus Sport Hybrid 40M is the first motoryacht to be RINA classified with the additional class notation “Hybrid Propulsion (Y)” along with “Green Star Plus Platinum” and AUT CCS (Y).
