The McConaghy Ker 46 Patrice has won the IRC division of this year’s Airlie Beach Race Week in Australia. With six consecutive first places Patrice secured overall victory and did not need to sail the last race.
For Tony Kirby and his crew it is a culmination of a 10-month effort in learning and refining the new boat. “Ecstatic, there is no other word to describe it,” says Kirby. “It is beyond my wildest expectations to win six races in a row. It was a pretty windy regatta. The boat is great. Everything worked brilliantly. The effort that we have put into the boat over the last 10 months has really paid off. We have worked closely with McConaghy Boats doing a bit of tweaking and optimisation.”
Since Patrice was launched late last year Kirby had secured a podium position in every race he completed, but first place had eluded him until now. The competition is this race was intense, and the 46-footer held its own, mixing it up with the 50- and 60-footers. Patrice was able to secure victory over Ichi Ban by a significant seven-point margin even though Patrice took the day off to celebrate.
