The Penghu Regatta was held again in Magong Harbour among the cruising grounds of the Penghu Islands off the west coast of Taiwan over two weekends this summer. Sponsored again by Simpson Marine and Beneteau this second annual event was a great success.
The number of competitors increased by 50% over last year’s fleet – 16 boats raced with several Lagoon cruising catamarans providing ideal spectator boats for owners and their guests.
June 21 presented three races for the Penghu Inshore Series. There were light winds and minor showers across the course in the morning with wind building in the early afternoon, the local sailors showed strong knowledge of the currents in the ever improving conditions. Skipper Ben Lin proceeded to grab all bullets for IRC aboard High Castle with Rosy Sky, the Beneteau First 45 in a close second, followed by Marc Lefevre in his Mumm 36 Rewind. Chris Carney won in the Open fleet on the Yamaha 31, Yo Yo.
The Penghu Inshore Series prize giving and banquet with a band at the Yuen Tai Hotel was a highlight of the weekend.
On Sunday the games resumed with the Penghu Around the Island Race, winds built in the afternoon allowing for some exciting sailing. Yo Yo won again for the Open fleet and wound up with a perfect weekend while Richard Allen sailed Rosy Sky to the top for IRC by a significant margin.
After five days of enjoying the islands 10 boats returned for the Audi Passage Race from Penghu Bay to Wangan where the final prizes were given and a wrap up party was held on Wangan Beach. Tony Chen drove Poya, a Beneteau First 40 to victory for the IRC class with Justin Wang taking Open aboard Maggie, the Beneteau Oceanis 37.
The regatta is hosted by the Penghu County Sailing Association with the Penghu County Sailing Committee and also has the support of the County Tourism Department.
