Twenty-one female Techno 293 sailors will fly their flag at the second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing China from Aug 16-28.
The hard work to get to the event was done during the continental qualification period spanning from July 2013 to April 2014. Nanjing 2014 is a unique multi-sport event. It will give the young sailors a once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy the sport they love, make friendships that will last a lifetime and engage in Cultural and Education Programmes (CEP) focused on the Olympic spirit and Olympic values.
Held at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre, more than 20,000 spectators are expected to attend the Opening Ceremony on Aug 16.
After the ceremony the Girls Techno 293 fleet will turn their focus towards racing which will start at 1100 local time on Aug 18.
There is plenty of exceptional talent across the fleet. Katya Ida Coelho (IND), Niijima Rina (JPN), Coral Headey (NZL), Si Ying Lim (SIN), Duangkamon Phongern (THA), Derin Gumenc (TUR), Hong Kong’s Choi Wing Chi and China’s Lin Li Wu will all be in contention.
In the Girls Byte CII fleet, the game will be wide open with an abundance of young, dynamic sailors present in the 30-boat pack.
Continental qualifiers have ensured the best sailors, aged 15-16, from 30 nations have earned their right to be on the YOG start line.
Five YOG nation spots were picked up at the 2013 Worlds: Hungary’s Maria Erdi and Odile van Aanholt (NED), Bermuda's Cecilia Wollman, Singapore's Samantha Yom and the Dominican Republic's Celeste Lugtmeijer all qualified and will do battle again on Lake Jinniu.
Other sailors on their way to Nanjing include: Elyse Ainsworth (AUS), Khouloud Moustafa Mansy (EGY), Kirana Wardojo (INA), Nurshazrin BT Mohamad Latif (MAS), and Nichaporn Panmuean (THA).
Light winds are predicted on Lake Jinniu across the 11 race series.
