Leg 3 Of Volvo Ocean Race To Begin Jan 3
Published: Tuesday, 30 December 2014
The Volvo Ocean Race continues with Leg 3 starting off the new year. This leg will take the fleet past India, Malacca and Singapore, Borneo or Vietnam and finally back to Hainan Island in China.
Sailing around past the bottom of Sri Lanka can be a mixed bag of weather, but it will be hot, with storms very likely. After this the Malacca Straights presents its own set of challenges with fickle, often light winds, heavy traffic, unlit fishing boats and random floating hazards. Rounding Singapore isn’t easy either, with its thousands of fishing boats milling about and mammoth cargo ships at anchor.
The final beat towards Sanya city on Hainan Island will most probably be a rough upwind one.
