The Land Rover BAR crew, winners of the America’s Cup World Series event in Portsmouth, were congratulated on their victory at a prize giving ceremony following the event.
Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke, Event Chairman and Land Rover BAR Founding Shareholder and Board member Sir Keith Mills, as well as Commercial Commissioner for the America’s Cup Dr. Harvey Schiller were present to award the British team.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge presented the trophies and medals while Michael Burke presented personalised Louis Vuitton Keepall Ombre bags embossed with the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup logo to team Skipper Ben Ainslie.
This was the first time in 164 years that the event had been held in British waters. As the oldest trophy in world sport, the America’s Cup inaugural event was first staged in 1851 off the Isle of Wight in front of Portsmouth. Louis Vuitton has been a major partner of the America’s Cup since 1983.
“The America’s Cup is the grail of yachting, says Burke. “It sees challengers racing across the oceans for a lifelong quest. The freedom, courage, skill and competence that it requires reflect the trailblazing spirit of Louis Vuitton. We were able to witness here in Portsmouth some amazing racing on Saturday and are thrilled to have successfully launched a new chapter of our shared history.”
The next America’s Cup World Series event will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden (Aug 27-30).
