The Thai island of Phuket is preparing for sailors and spectators from around the world to head to the island to compete in the Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2015 (July 15-19).

Phuket Raceweek 1

This is the opening event of the 2015/16 AsianYachting Grand Prix, a regional sailing championship that includes 12 of the best regattas in Asia.

Starting today Phuket will also host the Multihull Solutions Regatta – Phuket held at Ao Chalong Yacht Club. The event will be held July 9-12.

Now in its eighth year, the regatta will have the following classes: Class 1 Racing Multihulls with valid OMR ratings; Class 2 Firefly 850 Sports One Design; Class 3 Cruising Multihulls without OMR ratings; Class 4 Classic Multihulls.

Phuket Raceweek 2

For the Phuket Raceweek, IRC 1, IRC 2, IRC Cruising, Corsair, Firefly and Multihull Classes will have up to eight races. The Charter Class will have up to five races.

Phuket and the surrounding area are currently experiencing strong winds and weather forecasts predict this to continue through the weekend and into early next week. As a safety measure, Phuket's Marine Office 5 recently issued an order for all boats under 24-metres in length to remain in port and not put to sea.

"At this stage we are monitoring the situation. Looking at long-term weather forecasts the winds are predicted to drop prior to Phuket Raceweek,” says Managing Director of Orgnisers Media Business Services Co Byron Jones. “If this is the case then there will be no impact on Raceweek and participants and the regatta will go ahead as planned."

For those not involved in the races, the Phuket Raceweek is holding plenty of social events. Four beachside parties are the highlight of the onshore activities, including free-flowing beer, wine and spirits, courtesy of official suppliers Mount Gay Rum, Peroni Beer and Finca de Malpica wine.
