ClipperTelemed+ finished in 12th place after taking a tactical gamble to go furthest north in search of a better path to Albany, finding themselves stuck in the centre of a high pressure weather system in extremely light winds.
Race Director Justin Taylor offered a retirement option to the team on November 23 and Skipper Matt Mitchell accepted 12th place and started motor-sailing.
Upon arrival into Albany, Mitchell said: "I saw a potential opportunity to get ahead of our (at the time) 10th place. We took a gamble and we lost massively. I certainly learnt a lesson there. On the face of all of that, the guys kept morale up and were really on the ball.”
"We were sat in the wind hole for days and I took the decision to retire,” continued Mitchell. “There was a mixture of feelings when we turned on the engine. Initial jubilation about the fact we could start moving, however disappointment about the fact we did have to retire, and lots of talk of hindsight.”
"The guys’ spirits have remained high throughout," Matt added.
LMAX Exchange claimed the overall victory of Leg 3, after leading the fleet throughout most of the 4,845-nautical mile journey.
Derry~Londonderry~Doire took second place, after a battle with Qingdao during the final 24 hours. Qingdao arrived in third place, just three hours after their closest rival.
Crews enjoyed the Albany stopover with a number of activities including a touch rugby game against the Amazing Albany team, surfing lessons, and a visit to the Albany Rowing Club.
Leg 4 to Sydney, Hobart, and the Whitsundays, Queensland will begin the first week of December.
