The series will combine the results from the previous three races including the Around the Island Race, Lipton Trophy race and Tomes Cup race to identify Hong Kong’s top helm for the season.
The Memorial Vase was presented to RHKYC more than 40 years ago by the Hong Kong Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves (HKRNVR) with the condition that "the course should take participating yachts into waters patrolled by the HKRNVR."
Although the HKRNVR is now defunct, the trophy continues to serve as a reminder to yachtsmen of when amateur sailors played their part in the security of Hong Kong.
The passage of time since the event’s inception has seen the course for the race adjusted to take into account Marine Department restrictions on sailing and towing boats through the congested central harbour.
In keeping with the Deed of Gift, the Race Officer will select a course which will take the fleet out through the harbour to the eastern approaches and back - his particular choice of course influenced by the prevailing wind conditions on the day.
Last year’s winners, Peter Backe and Anthony Day are looking to make it two in a row as they head up the list of contenders going into the final race.
The HKRNVR Memorial Vase is a pursuit race, which is different to normal yacht racing. Competitors are given staggered start times under a RHKATI handicap, with the slowest boats starting first and the faster boats set off in pursuit with the time delay between classes of boats being determined by their handicaps. If all boats are sailed equally well, they should (in theory) all finish at the same time.
Following the race, a prize presentation will be held at the RHKYC, with prizes to be awarded not only to the various winners of the HKRNVR Memorial Vase, but also the overall winner of the 2015-2016 Top Dog Trophy Series. The Top Skipper will be presented with a jacket from Ralph Lauren, Official Apparel for the Series, together with a bespoke iPhone 6, customised by Connexion D’Art.
