Hong Kong Teams Shine In Groupama Race

During the Groupama race in New Caledonia Sept 25-Oct 1, Carl Kwok on Beau Geste from Hong Kong became the champion of Group IRC, followed by another team, Scallywag by David Witt from the same city and Aussie Mat Allen on Ichi Ban finished the podium.

Kiwi Simon Hill on Team Vodafone completed Group Multi with victory, while Claude Rigal abroad Moemiti from Tahiti finished second and Alain Vilas on Birdies Furax II from New Caledonia came on third.
In ORC Class, the New Caledonians dominated the race on home waters, with Michel Quintin on Banque de Nouvelle Caleonie, Vincent Trinquet on Boulegue Pao Prod and Olivier Decouzon on Ketal completed the podium.
Christiaan Arns on Notorious from New Zealand finished Class ORC1 right after local candidate Patrick Baldi with his Keel Bill Leblanc Illuminations, while Jean-Christophe Verge on XLR8 – Province Sud was at third place.
Hull on Vodafone took the title of Temps Reels, with Scallywag and Ichi Ban finishing the podiums.
Nineteen sailing yachts (32-100 feet) took the departure at from Baie des Citrons in Noumea. More than sixty boats, stand up paddles, catamarans and thousand of people attended the departure, under an unusually west wind around 10 to 12 knots.
Scallywag, the longest monohull, was also the fastest boat to sail around New Caledonia. She took only two days, 13 hours, 19 min and 55s to finish the race. Thus, she has established a new record for monohulls.
