The team had been trailing Emirates Team New Zealand by a daunting 8-1 score. The first team to win nine points would win the Cup. And then, improbably, Oracle Team USA started to win. As the gap on the leaderboard closed, the confidence of the team grew.
On Sept 25, the team was in the position to complete one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history.
"We've come back from a very deep hole," says Skipper Jimmy Spithill on the eve of the final race. "We want this. We're not going to leave anything in the tank. The boys will find another level to go to. I'm going to ask for everything and, of course, I know they'll deliver."
Off the starting line, Oracle Team USA fell behind by a length at the first mark, but on the upwind leg, Spithill asked, and his team delivered a superhuman effort. The American defender made the pass and sailed into history.
