The Lipton Trophy is a pursuit race and is the second of four events that make up the Top Dog Trophy Series 2016-2017.  The first event was Around the Island Race Nov 27 and the next two (also pursuit races) are the HKRNVR Memorial Vase Jan 14 and the Tomes Cup Apr 29.

With a fleet of around 50 expected, 13 entries have been received until Dec 1 and boats are able to enter right up to 15 minutes before the warning signal sounded ahead of their particular start time or 14:30hrs, whichever is earlier.

Competing boats in pursuit races will be given staggered starting times determined by their handicaps, which is different from the usual yacht racing practice. The slowest boats start first with the faster boats starting afterwards in pursuit. In theory, if all the boats are sailed equally well, all boats should finish at the same time.
