“Asia Superyacht Rendezvous is all about having a jolly, fun atmosphere where participation is encouraged, but not required – an event where it is about having a great time and putting the sails up”, says Asia Pacific Superyachts General Manager Gordon Fernandes.
The event began with a stunning cocktail party upon S/Y Dunia Baru with warm hospitality from Owner Mark Robba. A gala dinner was held later in the resort. Benetti Challenge, hosted by event co-sponsor Benetti Yachts, was an exciting model yacht competition.
“The Rendezvous is one of the most exclusive events in the world superyacht sector,” says Benetti CCO Fabio Ermetto. “This is one of the few regattas in the world that allows both motor and sailing yachts (75ft and longer) to participate alongside each other, with sailing superyachts racing on a course marked by power superyachts.”
During the ASR Winner’s Cup, S/Y Aphrodite, S/Y Tiara, S/Y Bliss and S/Y Dallinghoo battled it out in an impressive display of workmanship to create an exciting race for spectators. After the final yacht crossed the finish line, scores totaled four points for S/Y Aphrodite; nine points for S/Y Tiara; 12 points for S/Y Bliss; and 15 points for S/Y Dallinghoo, making S/Y Aphrodite the first champion of the ASR Winner’s Cup.
Captain Simon Blundell accepted the trophy on behalf of his crew at the Gala Dinner, and after a little friendly jabbing at his competitors, stated that he looked forward to coming back again next year.
“It was the best thing we did, it really was,” says SALA Resort Phuket General Manager Jon Ashenden. “It’s brought exposure to the brand, and brought great recognition to the destination on Mai Khao. After experiencing this, we would love to be re-involved in this completely unique experience to our customers and our guests. I really think that it puts us on the map as a destination and the property itself. I think the clients would definitely welcome possibly being involved in 2017.”
