Dutch boat builder DNA has launched the foiling TF10 trimaran, which went through sea trials in July and August. The first hull was conceived towards the end of 2015 and has been commissioned by five US members from the New York Yacht Club and who purchased for personal use. Six orders have been received by the shipyard so far.

The 11m(36ft) trimaran is a One Design foiling model that allows amateur sailors to ride on, since it’s made to be easy to handle. The controls are also similar to that on monohulls. The model is designed by Morrelli and Melvin.

Steering is light, the foils are forgiving in terms of control and operation due to their inherent design, rake control is electric and very easy to do. The amas fold inwards for shipping, which means the boat can be transported by road too.

The TF10 is fitted with a deck mounted rotating, carbon fiber wing mast (with a regatta splice for ease of logistics) and a wishbone boom elevated above deck for safety (mast and boom are made by Southern Spars). The (North Sails) sailplan comprises a decksweeper design mainsail which is reefable (double), a reefable jib, and a furling gennaker.

Carbon benches are available for crew seating, which offers helming position other than the cockpit.

The daggerboards are fitted inside of shock absorbing casings in case of collision, reducing the risk of severe hull damage. The T-rudders will kick up in the case of impact at higher speeds. Foils can be inserted into the floats from above, thereby eliminating the need to launch the boat with a crane. It may also be launched from the road trailer on a normal boat ramp.

To safely sail and foil, the TF10 is equipped with electrically-powered rake control for the Z-boards and T-rudders. This system allows for similar foil trimming options (rake forward or aft) as the 2017 America’s Cup Class boats have sophisticated tuning of foil settings while sailing for a higher pace around the course. 

To walk around safely, the areas between floats and centre hull feature a semi-rigid carbon deck. This also keeps the boat drier when sailing fast. The most forward trampoline, reaching from bow to front beam, is a traditional mesh trampoline.
