International performing artist Sammi Cheng will provide the headline entertainment for the first ever Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong stopover in a special concert the night before the HGC In-Port Race on January 26. Also starring on the stage are Cantopop stars Gin Lee, Ellen Loo and Adrian Fu.
HGC is the sole presenting sponsor of the stopover. The HGC In-Port Race (Jan 27) and Round the Island Race (Jan 28) are the two important races to take place before the Volvo Ocean Race Leg 5 start (Feb 1).
Seven participating racing yachts will berth during the concert, which is a free-to-public centrepiece activity for the 15-day long race festival at Kai Tak Runway Park.
The Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong Race Festival (Jan 17-31) will feature a boatload of sailing and entertainment, with family-friendly entertainment on offer daily, including DJs and other live music from Hong Kong’s up and coming local bands and entertainers, alongside a variety of food and beverage options and sailing and watersport-themed activities.
In addition to sponsoring the Hong Kong race, HGC is also sponsoring a performance of traditional Chinese Opera from the Hong Kong Young Talent Opera Group appearing on January 24, and will stage an HGC Talent showcase and e-Sport competition at the Race Festival grounds.
“The race is greatly supported by the Home Affairs Bureau and Hong Kong Sailing Federation and together with free performances from artists Sammi Cheng, Gin Lee, Ellen Loo and Adrian Fu, the Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong is setting a new benchmark for international events in the city,” said Grant Calder, Port Director for the Hong Kong race.
“This concert is only one of the numerous entertainment initiatives that we are excited to share with the people of Hong Kong and we are confident that the appeal of these superstar performers will draw new interest to the Volvo Ocean Race and sailing in Hong Kong and we look forward to welcoming the entire city to the Race Festival at Kai Tak Runway Park this January,” Calder added.
