Plymouth-based Princess Yachts will premiere its new R35 – designed in partnership with Ben Ainslie Racing Technologies (BAR Technologies) and Pininfarina – at Cannes Yachting Festival (September 11-16).

BAR Technologies, the British company behind Britain’s attempt to win back America’s Cup, raised the performance bar with Princess Active Foil System (AFS). Instead of elevating the hull above the waterline like America’s Cup sailing yachts, it uses the lift to adjust heel and running angle, optimising ride and comfort. Twin moving foils beneath the waterline provide improved dynamic stability and increase efficiency.

The full carbon-fibre hull – designed with Italian styling house Pininfarina – is made with a resin-film infusion, which allows for an efficient use of resin and a subsequent weight saving of 25 per cent over glass fibre. The avoidance of gel coat and an alternative Sprint-system (has a surface film equivalent to gel coat) also shaves a further 300kg off the weight.

The twin all-aluminium, direct-injection V8 petrol engines with variable valve timing and fully CNC machined intake and exhaust ports provide levels of torque and responsiveness to safely power the R35 to 50 knots – the fastest-ever Princess.

“The R35 is a rare mix of extreme elegance and technology,” said Antony Sheriff, Executive Chairman of Princess Yachts.

“Often design is a triumph of beauty over function or function over beauty. Princess has been able to develop a technologically game-changing yacht that is also stunningly beautiful. It is in every way a new experience, yet also instantly recognisable as a Princess.”
