Decision Time For Dongfeng Race Team In Volvo Ocean Race

“Stop following us, or stay where you are,” says Dongfeng Race Team Skipper Charles Caudrelier about the boats that are quickly catching up.
Team Brunel is now just 1.5nm behind in second place of Leg 3 of the Volvo Ocean Race.
The fleet is currently sailing downwind but in winds that are getting lighter as they approach the centre of the anticyclone that they are going around. This means the fleet compresses before they gybe back out to better winds. Dongfeng Race Team are trying to get to the northeast Monsoon winds first.
When to gybe is a big decision – too soon and the descent of the Indian Ocean will be too close to the lighter winds off the coast of India, too late and the winds will be lighter and the distance sailed further. Timing is everything in this game, and the timing of this gybe could be decisive for the next phase of Leg 3.
